by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais
First performance 1st May 1786 at the National Hofheater, Vienna

A day of madness such as never seen on the opera stage before! Marriage, love, flirtation and droit du seigneur become uneasy bedfellows when the masters suddenly see their authority being undermined by their servants. The spirit of the Enlightenment, the verve of Beaumarchais and especially the dramatic instinct of the Da Ponte – Mozart partnership make this work one of the turning points in the history of the opera, a stroke of genius from a composer barely twenty nine years old.
