And must be found. God commands
That he who brought the plague to Thebes
Be sent away. This is what Apollo says,
Our God."
OEDIPUS REX, Act I
We remain in ancient times for these two Parisian works by Stravinsky. Oedipus Rex is set in Ancient Greece, in Thebes, at the time when Oedipus, driven by blind destiny and the fury of the gods, committed his involuntary crime. In The Nightingale we catch a rare glimpse of the China of antiquity, a land aglow with legends both charming and mysterious. While both these works sprang from the pen of the same composer, Stravinsky, the stories, settings and music are very different. With the delicate impressionism of The Nightingale and the violent neo-classicism of Oedipus Rex, this programme shows the great Russian composer in all his versatility.
